Port de Grave

I had a great day out shooting with Kim Goodyear and her friends. It all started at 7 in the morning, hoping that the sun was gonna come out from behind the clouds we still managed to get some great shots.

Port de Grave, in the early years, the work of the Anglican missionaries of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Lands (SPG) in Bareneed, was carried on by a local layman by the name of Mr. John Sarelle who held services in the community.
In 1816 the first Anglican church on the Port de Grave peninsula was built in Bareneed and then later around 1850 a new much larger church was built which served to local people for the next seventy five years. A third church was built and completed in 1930 and this is the St Marks Church that the members of Bareneed parish worship in today. This church was known as the “Free Labour” church because it was built with free labour.
Two local natives of Bareneed became ministers in the Anglican community, Rev Harris Batten and Rev Canon John T. Richards who was also awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1945.

Amelia Earhart Coin

The groundbreaking career and mysterious disappearance of Amelia Earhart continues to captivate fans worldwide. Her journey to becoming one of history's most famous female aviators is an inspiration to all.
Although Friendship never departed Harbour Grace, Amelia's presence was still well known here. Just five years after the first solo transatlantic flight, she attempted the great feat. With the famous Antarctic pilot, Bernt Balchen, and her mechanic, Eddy Gorski, Amelia departed New Jersey. Stopping at St. John, NB, to spend the night, Balchen took the controls again, but only as far as Harbour Grace.
There is little doubt that Newfoundland's unique geographic proximity to Europe (3025 km or 1880 mi) was the primary reason that it frequently functioned as the land and sea base for aviation endeavors and was thus propelled to the forefront of aviation history. Likely than not, when such an historical event occurred, the setting was a small community located in Conception Bay North called Harbour Grace. In fact, from 1927 to 1936, this community figured prominently in the history of dozens of successful and not so successful attempts by aviators of several nationalities to tame the skies. It was against such a backdrop of several aviation firsts that Amelia Earhart - Putnam's daring exploit on May 20, 1932, took place.
